The pros and cons of under-mount sinks
An undermount sink refers to a sink installed underneath the countertop, where the countertop is slightly larger than the sink. There are two installation methods: one is to cut the hole along the outer edge of the sink, and the other is to cut the hole along the inner edge of the sink.
1. Advantages of undermount sinks:
Undermount sinks are very easy to clean, with no hard-to-reach hygienic corners. They also make the sink and countertop look like one unified piece, with no protrusions, giving a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing look.
2. Disadvantages of undermount sinks:
Installing an undermount sink is relatively complicated. It requires cutting holes and sealing gaps, which is not as convenient as installing a drop-in sink. The way an undermount sink is installed means the sink and countertop are fixed as one unit, making it difficult to remove or replace. Usually, you have to replace both together, which is troublesome and costly. Additionally, undermount sinks rely on glue for support, so their load-bearing capacity is limited, and there is a risk of the sink falling.
3. Recommended usage scenarios:
Since the support of undermount sinks is not very strong, they are definitely not very suitable for use in kitchens, as that might shorten their lifespan. Undermount sinks are more suitable for bathrooms, where they don’t need to carry much weight, are easy to clean, and look neat and elegant.
